“La série ‘Aussi calme que les Psaumes’ dépeint une petite ville que j’ai visité durant ces dernières années et qui m’a toujours semblé légèrement décalée – dans le sens où toutes les interactions que l’on peut avoir avec ses habitants semblent encore fortement conditionnées par l’époque de l’apartheid, ou tout du moins par un sentiment de soumission fondé sur l’ethnie ou le statut social. Cela s’ajoute aux histoires étranges que les habitants m’ont raconté, ce qui m’a constamment donné envie d’y retourner pour prendre des photos. Je continue à m’y rendre, dès que possible, avec la volonté de retranscrire en photo cet étrange sentiment de malaise ainsi que la dimension très picturale de la ville.”
William Sheepskin est un photographe basé à Cape Town en Afrique du Sud. Il a grandi dans de nombreux pays en Afrique tels que la Tanzanie ou l’île Maurice. Après avoir reçu avec mention son master en photographie à l’Université des Arts de Londres, il retourna là où il est né à Cape Town où il continue depuis sa carrière dans la photographie.

“The title of this series ‘Calm Like Psalms’ comes from a small town I’ve been visiting for the past few years that has always felt slightly “off” –in the sense that the interactions one can have with people still seem to be largely informed by the Apartheid era, or at the very least a sense of subservience based on race or social standing. This in combination with some bizarre stories that residents have shared with me has inspired a consistent interest in returning there and making photographs. I continue to return there when possible in an attempt to photographically combine this slight feeling of unease and the surface level picturesque appearance of the town.”
William Sheepskin is a photographer based in Cape Town, South Africa. He grew up in various places around Africa such as Tanzania and Mauritius, and upon receiving his honors degree in photography from The University of the Arts in London returned to his birthplace of Cape Town to continue pursuing a career in photography.
