It all started with a pint in a pub in Cornwall, a county in England. A friend of the photographer Louis Bamford tells him that he just put together a football team "Sunday League", sponsored by this very pub. The unexpected combination of sports and drinking is a hit, he found his topic. Not being a player himself, Louis wishes to immortalise above all the social aspect of the sport, and its unifying aspect. He documents with kindness and mischief the camaraderie in English amateur football, focusing as much on the great anonymous sporting moments as on these Saturday nights’ discussions and anecdotes. Because for these men, all these Sunday meetings are an outlet for everyday life.Whether it is to photograph players on Sunday mornings with big blue skies or on the more gloomy ones, a very soft light emerges from Louis’ images, which gives to his work a serial coherence. A coherence coupled with a controlled distance compared to the subject and enables to offer a variety of frames for an ever changing narration. Conceived as real paintings, Louis Bamford's works capture the present moment while evoking an out-of-field imagination, leaving carte blanche to the sensibility of each one.Starting with the ambition to carry out a work of observation within the framework of his university course, with the distance specific to the documentary, Louis finally, and literally, "played along" until befriending these men, animated by the shared passion of football to offer us a series of a remarkable poetry.
After graduating in Press and Editorial Photography in Cornwall Louis re-located to London where he works as a photographer for a creative agency. His work primarily involves sports and portraiture. Coming from a documentary background a lot of his work involves narrative and wants people to explore the his work through visual storytelling.
